While somewhat unsubstantiated, it seems to damage the auto clutches over time and cause failure. Any transfer case without the 4A setting is fine with almost any ATF.

With a Viscosity of 7.5 cSt @100C I wouldn't want to use a Dex 6 or LV ATF which has a 5.5-6.0 cSt viscosity. The Mercon shears about 2X as fast as the Mercon V. So on that alone, change the Mercon more often. F. Mercon ULV is alot easier to get than Dexron ULV. I know this doesn't help directly, but in the case of Dexron VI and Mercon LV, as I recall, Castrol has a single fluid that is licensed (not approved, not recommended, not "suitable for"), but licensed by both Ford and GM. That strongly suggests they are the same fluid if Castrol can make one .

Maxlife is good stuff, and it seems to be working fine with no problems. You're out-of-warranty, so you don't need a licensed Mercon LV fluid, but if you still want one, they are easy to obtain.
