For a while now when I shake it even slightly I can hear a noise and feel a vibration/humming which is clearly the rotor spinning round. The rotor works because I don't need to wind it. The watch also works as normal and keeps good time perhaps gaining 2 seconds a day, and also winds smoothly.

I have never noticed any rotor noise from any of my Rollies. I have a Pam164 and you can not only hear the rotor but you can feel it spin. Since I got the Pam and noticed the rotor wobble, I have listened long and hard to my Rollies and can only hear them ticking, the rotor is absolutely silent. Well...I just noticed that my Rolex now has noise when I shake it or shake my wrist. It's not real loud, but you can hear it. Datejust Rotor noise? It’s normal. 31xx whisper quiet. 32 series have ceramic bearings or something. I find it harder to regulate by position as well compared with the older movements. I noticed this rattle and clicking noise in my 3 month SubC. Went to the AD, played with another Sub and heard the same noise. Now I can only hear the rattle when holding the watches right next to my ear.
In my research leading up to my purchase, I read that this movement had a lot of rotor noise. I even saw some YouTube videos demonstrating this. However, so far I cannot hear a peep, nor can I feel the rotor moving like I can on some of my cheaper watches.
If there's a loud metallic grinding noise, take it to RSC - that means the rotor is dragging against the movement, usually due to a loose ball bearing which needs to be tightened. Had my Pelagos movement (MT5612) fixed recently for this issue, free of charge. Rotor noise is a good as it means the rotor is free spinning and winding the watch with your wrist movements. Sounds like a bunch of flees playing castanets inside the case. A modern movement with rotor bearings not feeling the rotor is usually a sign of trouble. Thankfully, there’s quite a few and while we’re not saying any of these watches live up to the legacy of the Oyster, they do offer fantastic sets of specs, equally classic design DNA and affordable price points. Here are our favourites.
